Being a Liberty Republican

Tonight, after trivia, I sat next to a Richfieldian who just moved here from San Francisco. I mentioned that I'm running for office and he was SO excited to hear that a young minority single mom was running and said "So OF COURSE your a Dem, right?" No.

The rest of the night was a wonderful discussion about where we agree and disagree and why. We talked LGBT, Trump, gun rights, business law, and everything in between. And, as always happens to me, he said "...but you're so nice, why are you Republican?"

There are a LOT of us who are nice and smart and for your rights. Many millennial Republicans are open minded and welcoming. We want to learn other perspectives and we want to teach conservative values and why we believe them. I realized that this is going to be hard on both sides. I want left-leaning friends to feel listened to and know I'm on their side. I want my hard right friends to learn something new and find out why someone might disagree with them, but also find where I am in line with them to promote liberty and freedoms. It's not pandering, it's learning and growing for ALL of the people a Representative should represent.

At the end of the night, my new friend said I might be the first Republican he votes for. I said I'll work for him and for everyone in Richfield and Bloomington. Great first night as a candidate and ready to go til November!
